On the way back to the tailor’s shop I saw a screw approaching with a prisoner that I knew from my Soho days. It was Reggie Kray who recognised me immediately. Reggie halted and I stopped too, then Reggie unbowed and full of authority as ever, extended his hand in the manner of the West End villains and our hands met and shook. “All right Reggie?” I said. “All right Mickey” Reggie replied.
I noticed that the screw with Reggie was standing respectfully waiting for him to speak with me and I was not surprised because it was a legend among prisoners that the Krays knocked out any screws that tried to control them or showed them “disrespect” as they called it.
We stood there for a moment then Reggie shook hands with me again and we were off.
“I did not know that you were friends of the Krays Muldoon” the screw accompanying me said.
“He’s not a friend of mine just someone I knew while I worked in Soho.

“Yes I have just spent the last ten years inside in Parkhurst and other prisons and I have kept notes on how drugs like Largactil, Diazepam and so on were used to control the more recalcitrant prisoners” I said. I took the cardboard tube that I was carrying and pulled out a roll of drawings that I had done in pen and ink.
“I would like you to have a look at these” I said offering the drawings to the editor.
He unrolled them carefully and spread them out on his desk.
“Hmm these are interesting! What’s this one?” he asked looking at me.

The Food Riots
On the hotplate the rumblings of discontent from the prisoners was getting louder. “What’s this shit?” a prisoner said to me.
“Don’t get angry with me because I am only serving out the shit. Why don’t you do something about it?” I replied.
Later this guy Lazlo Virag, a Hungarian, approached me. “What can we do about the shit food Mickey?” he asked.
“Don’t fucking eat it! If you keep eating it then they will keep serving it!” I said. “What we have to starve?” Lazlo asked.
“No you don’t have to starve, but you will have to go hungry for a bit and miss a few meals.”
“We will have a riot soon if they don’t change the food. I was in the Hungarian uprising, I know what to do and we have plenty of men who will take part” Lazlo said getting angry. “Look Lazlo if you have a riot you will be beaten to a pulp by the Mufti Squad and the ring leaders will be ghosted to the seg units in special prisons.
